Cap’n Crunch is a brand of flavored corn and oat cereals, first produced in 1963 and now manufactured by Quaker Oats, a segment of PepsiCo since 2001. The product is promoted by a graphic mascot called Cap’n Crunch. The original Cap’n Crunch cereal was created to be reminiscent of a brown butter and sugar over rice recipe. It is one of the first breakfast cereals to use an oil coating for flavor, requiring a unique baking process.

Captain Crunch Cereal Ingredients

  • cornmeal,
  • Sugar, Oatmeal,
  • Brown sugar,
  • palm and/or coconut oil,

These ingredients do not appear to be flawed to the casual observer. While there are no animal ingredients, that doesn’t mean cap’n crunch ingredients are cruelty-free.

Ingredients such as sugar (particularly cane sugar), palm oil, and artificial colors are questionable as they may be linked to animal cruelty.

1. Sugar

Sugar is a statement to recognize food as non-vegan. bone char, that is made from charred bones of cattle and pigs, used to purify sugar to make it a much better white. This is unethical and may be enough to make most vegans avoid certain brands, but it’s not that simple.

2. Oil from palm trees

Palm oil is considered non-vegan since it is are linked to the deforestation of the rainforest, driving animals such as orangutans from their native habitats.

Trees are falling, leaving the animals vulnerable and deprived of a beneficial food source, leaving many to starve. As result, many vegans will refrain from buying products that contain palm oil.

3. Artificial colors

Cap’n crunch ingredients like artificial colors have been linked to animal cruelty for an obvious reason: they are by-products of animal testing, a process that exploits and hurts animals.

Captain Crunch contains both Yellow 5 and Yellow 6, which are derived from petroleum byproducts. Yellow 5 is still being tested on rats and mice, and this can be found in everything from baked goods to cosmetics. Animals are often killed at the end of the test. The health effects of artificial dyes are separate from veganism and ethical food choices.
