Stila has confirmed that they do not test their products or ingredients on animals or have others test them for them. They do not permit their suppliers to test their products on animals, and their suppliers do not do animal testing when required by law. Last but not least, their products are not sold in stores in mainland China or any other country that may require animal testing.
We would consider Stila to be cruelty-free based on our standards.
The Stila Cosmetics website displays the PETA cruelty-free bunny proudly. Stila Cosmetics has been certified cruelty-free by PETA. It is important to us that our supply partners are also committed to this value. They must certify that they do not conduct any tests on animals.
What About China’s Animal Testing Laws?
As Stila does not sell their products in retail stores in mainland China, they do not have to test on animals. In 2017, Stila Cosmetics stopped selling in China, so their products were no longer subjected to animal testing as per Chinese laws.
In some cases, ordinary cosmetics imported from another country may not be subject to animal testing after May 1, 2021. Most imported cosmetics are still legally required to undergo animal testing in 2022, however.
Who Owns Stila Cosmetics?
Estee Lauder owned Stila Cosmetics until 2006, when they sold the business to a private equity firm, Stila Corp. In 2009, Stila was sold to Patriarch Partners, a private equity firm based in New York.
Stila is Not 100% Vegan
In cosmetics, ‘Vegan’ can refer to an entire brand that is 100% vegan or a specific product that is vegan.
In Stila’s case, not all of their products are vegan. There are however a few that can be used by vegans.
How to know which of Stila’s products are vegan?
Since 2021, Stila is offering vegan products, and their website clearly displays which items are vegan-friendly.
Below is an updated statement I received from Stila about their new vegan products:
Stila Cosmetics appreciates your interest. In our products marked vegan (on our website or packaging) we ensure that the ingredients are not derived from animal products. In our laboratories, we are developing products that are not only vegan from the start, but also identify which of our non-vegan products can be made vegan. The availability of synthetic or plant-derived alternatives to animal-derived ingredients has increased over the years. We will convert our products with rich color and texture to 100% vegan ingredients as long as they deliver the same high-quality, so keep an eye out for new offerings.”
The fact that Stila has finally made an effort to develop vegan products and to convert existing formulas to veganism is a wonderful development! Stila told me in 2020 that it was not a vegan company. Their statement in 2020 reads as follows:
We do not claim to be vegan, but we do provide the ingredients on the packaging and at our convenience. Some of our formulations may contain animal byproducts, such as beeswax, carmine, and lanolin.” (this is from 2020)
I’m really excited about the new changes Stila is making!
