You could hardly speak out the words “fast food chicken” and “vegan restaurant.” at the same time. Vegan Options at Zaxbys really has a lot of options for vegans, which is surprising. Honestly, it’s not that bad.
Zaxby’s has a number of vegan options:
- Celery Sticks (No Ranch)
- Crinkle Fries
- Side Salad
- Texas Toast
- Tater Chips (No Ranch)
Below are the details of all of them. Along with that, I will answer some frequently asked questions about Zaxby’s onion rings, bread, fried pickles, and more! I have a clever suggestion for something you should take to Zaxby’s to dip with!
For those trying to avoid processed and fried food, I’ll finish with a whole-food vegan guide to Zaxby’s.
The Vegan Options at Zaxbys
According to the Zaxby website, I consulted their allergen menu before making this vegan menu. In addition to sending follow-up emails, I have clarified specific details.
The list I have put together is based on my 13 years of experience reading ingredient lists as a vegan. To that end, I have noted any details I have been unable to confirm.
1. Celery Sticks (No Ranch)
Celery… mmm. You should ask if they have peanut butter available (haha). This could actually be an excellent side if that is the case. It comes with 20 celery sticks, which is a good amount. (Or you can bring your own peanut butter, no problem.)
For dipping fries, chips, celery, or Texas toast, you can choose one of the following vegan sauces:
- Teriyaki sauce
- Tongue Torch
- BBQ sauce
- Sweet & Spicy
There is milk in both the Marinara sauce and the Original sauce. The egg is present in the Zax sauce.
3. Crinkle Fries
Chain restaurants serve french fries to vegans, who rely on them (mostly) to eat out. I like Zaxby’s fries because they’re vegan and they’re crinkle-cut, which is fun!
There is a possibility that these are fried in a shared fryer with chicken. In case you have any concerns about this, be sure to inquire at your location.
There are plenty of vegan-friendly drinks:
- Apple Juice
- Cherry Coke
- Hi-C Fruit Punch
- Unsweet Tea
- Diet Coke
- Coke Zero
- Dr. Pepper
- Mello Yello
- Barq’s Root Beer
- Sweet Tea
- Diet Dr. Pepper
5. Side Salad
If you’re a salad lover then you probably love this Zaxby’s vegetarian salad which called Zaxby’s Side Salad is typically vegan. However, if cheese or croutons are added at your location you will need to specify “no.”.
Greens, carrots, Roma tomatoes, and cucumbers are all part of the side salad.
There is only one vegan dressing, Lite Vinaigrette, but you can ask at your location if there are other options available.
Note: There is milk in the Mediterranean dressing.
6. Texas Toast
It would be a good idea to ask your location whether this item is dairy-free. According to the allergen menu on Zaxby’s website, it contains no milk or eggs. So, we’re good to go with this garlicky treat!
7. Tater Chips (No Ranch)
Zaxby’s Tater chips Basically, these are just potato chips, but they look fresher and tastier than bagged Lay’s chips. When ordering, please request “no ranch” because they often include it for dipping.
It is possible that these were fried with chicken in a shared fryer. Be sure to check with the store where you live if this matters to you.
Is Zaxby’s onion ring vegan?
Onion rings from Zaxby’s are not vegan. Dairy is included in them.
Is Zaxby’s Bread vegan?
The bread at Zaxby’s is vegan. A Texas Toast is not listed as containing dairy or egg in their allergen menu.
Are Zaxby’s fried pickles gluten-free?
Fried pickles from Zaxby’s are unlikely to be vegan. The egg is often used in the batter of fried pickles. However, the Fried Pickles are not on Zaxby’s current allergen menu on their website, so I have contacted Zaxby’s about this, and the response:
Our fried pickles are not gluten free.

Zaxby’s Spicy Fried Mushrooms are vegan?
It is possible that Zaxby’s Spicy Fried Mushrooms are vegan. Since they are not listed on Zaxby’s current allergen list on their website, I contacted Zaxby’s about this, and I am waiting to hear back from them.
Plant-based entire-food options
How about if you are not just trying to eat vegetarian at Zaxby’s but also whole-food plant-based (WFPB)? Can you fill up as a vegan while also avoiding fried and processed foods here?
I would prepare a WFPB menu at Zaxby’s the following way:
- Bring peanut butter to dip the celery in
- Celery Sticks (No Ranch)
- Side Salad
They might have peanut butter on hand, as I mentioned above. To be sure, I’d bring my own.
Zaxby’s other vegan options are either fried or processed, so the WFPB options are extremely limited!
